El Caballero De La Noche
This installation explores the anomalies and details of a bootleg DVD for The Dark Knight, which I got on Canal Street in New York City’s Chinatown. In the process of subtly manipulating (i.e. repetition through looping, extracting from the mass) the content is transformed into a hybrid, of found object and unique original. The elements are distorted into overbearing dramatic music with abstract chanting and reconstructed dialogs with unidentifiable new characters interacting with the cast of the film. The pieces are not only a re-contextualization of the movie, but an investigation of the movie’s mediated, illegitimate offspring.
The works include a photo of the lady who sold me the bootleg DVD, the DVD packaging contents, video of audience interruption, a title screen still (translated to Spanish), a video subtitle triptych (also translated to Spanish), and leftover video of the movie that I didn't use. View works below, video links are under the images. Note: In the actual instllation viewers were forced to walk in front of the projection of "Dark Knight/Dark Figures," adding yet another layer to the piece.
